This research led to the discovery of a single gene, the SHELL gene, responsible for the shell trait in the oil palm fruit. The genetic information is the core of the simple, fast and accurate TeraSawit SHELL Gel Kit, the first commercial kit developed for the oil palm industry. Use of the kit allows oil palm seed producers and growers to precisely determine the tenera, dura and pisifera fruit form of a seedling, nursery palm or field planted palm.
